| Tangier or Tangiers is a port city on northern Morocco located on the North African coastline near the western entrance to Strait of Gibraltar. This is where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic Ocean off Cape Spartel. As capital of Tangier-Tétouan Region, the city offers a fascinating Moroccan backdrop. Travelers love the sense of exotic mystery, ancient history, beautiful vistas and unspoiled beaches offered by an interesting blend of North African, Spanish and French influences. The port located beside the Medina is justa few hundred meters from the ville nouvelle. There is a taxi rank inside the port area but walking is perhaps the best way to see relatively compact Tangier. Petit taxis are common and Tangier is very easy to navigate around. The two main roads are Boulevard Mohamed V running from near the Medina to the ville nouvelle and Boulevard Mohamed VI that runs along the beachfront from the port to Malabata. The Medina region is a maze of alleyways and parts of it can be accessed only on foot. Take a simple walk along the beach to enjoy what the city is famed for. Visit attractions like the Kasbah, Tomb of Ibn Battouta, 14th century world traveler born in Tangier, Teatro Cervantes, Grand Socco, Tangier American Legation Museum (TALM) and Musée d'Art Contemporain de la Ville de Tanger. The Kasbah Museum is housed in the former Sultan's palace and is a must see not only for its collection of artifacts from Phoenician times till date, but also for the structure itself and the lovely garden. |
