| Rhodes is a Greek island located southwest of Turkey in the eastern Aegean Sea. Its largest of the Dodecanese islands, celebrated for the Colossus of Rhodes that was one of Seven Wonders of Ancient World. Rhodes is a favored port for cruising south eastern ships offering great pleasure to die-hard graecophiles. The city of Rhodes located at the northern tip of the island, is also the site of the ancient and modern commercial harbors. Ships tie up at the pier just outside the walled Old Town and you can simply walk over. Roam around charming streets of Old Town to experience everyday life where not much has changed over time. Outside Rhodes city, the island has a scattering of small villages and beach resorts like Faliraki, Lindos, Kremasti, Haraki, Pefkos, Archangelos, Afantou, Koskinou, Embona and Trianta. Tourism runs the place with Rhodes having five ports, three of them in Rhodes City and two on west coast and east coast of the Island. Cruise ships approaching Rhodes glimpse massive Old Town walls and graceful minarets along the arcaded waterfront markets. Rhodes actually contains three cities in one – the modern, ancient and mediaeval. The modern city has a cosmopolitan character with many late 20th century buildings and hotels. The ancient town has the acropolis extending up to the mediaeval city. The mediaeval city is surrounded by the high walls, dividing the core by the inner wall housing Collachio and Hora areas. The more popular attractions are the beautiful beaches. But history buffs love the architectural, cultural and religious sites like medieval ruins atop Filerimos Hill and the castles at Kastellos and Monolithos. |
