| Palermo, in Southern Italy is capital of both Autonomous Region of Sicily and Province of Palermo. Noted for its history, culture and architecture it is situated by the Gulf of Palermo in the Tyrrhenian Sea, to enjoy sea links with Genoa, Livorno, Civitavecchia, Naples, Salerno and Cagliari. Rich in regional history and wonderful monuments it is an attractive destination. This lively cultural centre is a delightful meeting ground of Mediterranean civilizations offering much to see. You have churches, palazzos, museums and galleries. The main church Cathedral dell’Assunta built during Norman period has been refurbished in various styles. The Church of S. Giovanni degli Eremiti has red Islamic-style cupolas and Church del Gesù has elaborate Sicilian baroque interior. Norman Palazzo built by the Arabs has been the city’s centre of power and is now home to the Regional Assembly. Visit the royal apartments and see the first floor having the Palatine Chapel with walls and floor in Byzantine mosaic and wooden ceiling in the Arabic style. Also Cuba and Zisa residences of Norman period are decorated in Arabic style. The Regional Archaeological Museum housed in an old monastery, displays Egyptian, Etruscan, Greek and Roman items recounting history of western Sicily. The Regional Gallery in Palazzo Abatellis exhibits Sicilian painting and sculpture and International Museum of Puppets houses Sicilian puppets and marionettes. Relax in beautiful gardens by walking in Parco della Favorita or the Botanic Garden or gardens of Villa Giulia. Do not miss out two most dramatic piazzas - Piazza Vigliena or Quattro Canti in the heart of the city formed by the weathered façades of four palazzos. And the center piece of delightful Piazza Pretoria - the majestic baroque fountain. |
