| Mayaguana located in the most easterly Out Island district of the Bahamas, is one of few places with a Lucayan name. It is the most isolated Bahamian island connected via mail boat system to the outside world. The largest settlement on the island is Abraham's Bay with communities at Betsy Bay and Pirate's Well in the neighborhood. Mayaguana has underwater coral reefs off-shore. Home to Bahamian Hutia, native rodent, nearly 118 species of birds are found on the island including American flamingos, Bartsch's iguanas, plovers, terns and osprey. Nesting sea turtles reside on eastern part of the island. Most regions remain untouched for lack of roads. As an out-of-the-way island Mayaguana remains out of regular tourist circuit. Those who do come are drawn by its seclusion and opportunities for scuba diving, bonefishing, snorkeling, and duck hunting. There are areas for advanced off-trail bikers. Ecotourism remains a huge draw bringing in select visitors. Unspoiled beauty makes it a stopover for enthusiasts looking for peaceful, relaxing vacations. Miles of untainted beaches are great for swimming, scuba diving and collecting awesome shells. The island is accessible by chartered boat rides or even mail boat if you want extra adventure. Several hiking, diving and fishing destinations are too spread out to reach on foot. Car rentals are an informal affair with locals pitching in. Mostly farmers and fishermen, noted for their friendliness inhabit the Island. Mayaguana will have you enjoying the most intense one-on-one and up-close and personal bonefishing experiences you might ever have. |
