| Long Island on Bahamas Out Islands is the most scenic of them all. 130 kilometers in length and 6 km wide, the northeast side has steep rocky headlands while southwest offers broad white beaches with soft sand. The dramatic terrain has white flat expanses, swamplands, beaches and sloping, low hills. Visitors come in from any of three official ports of entries -- Stella Maris Marina, Clarence Town or Salt Pond. Port St George at Stella Maris Marina features docks and boat ramp. Stella Maris, the tourist hub has many resorts. A lone main road runs from north to south. There is limited taxi service available to reach Deadman's Cay and Clarence Town in south center of Long Island. Clarence Town, the capital and Deadman's Cay are key settlements. Mangrove Beach, Hamilton (extensive cave system) and Salt Pond (Regattas) draw the tourists. Home to great dive spots Long Island has numerous shallow and deep sites with Dean's Blue Hole, more than 600 feet as the major attraction. An 80 mile long shoreline offers soft sandy beaches fringed by mangroves. It is a haven for fishing, sailing and yachting. The Island is particularly noted for its caves and surrounding bays and inlets. You have plentiful opportunities for scuba diving, freediving, snorkeling or just relaxing on beaches. Cape Santa Maria Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Long Island offers incredible variety of dive spots amid coral head and reef sites. You can explore great locations. Lee ward side is mostly calm with many sites that are easy and safe for diving. The Atlantic shelves are dramatic with vast areas of incredible coral fields. The water here is bluer with fascinating underwater scenery providing raw adventure. |
