| Dublin Port lies in the heart of the city with cruise ships stopping close to the beautiful city. Getting in and out of the modern port terminal is very easy as it lies close to the city center. Cruise passengers can readily go to the city by taxis and buses that are readily available. Shore excursions to surrounding areas are aplenty and you can take guided tours or do it on your own. Two 14th century towers - Tour de la Chaîne and Tour Saint Nicolas standing opposite each other welcome visitors. As the capital of Charente-Maritime region this port town has Vieux Port or the Old Harbour as its most famed attraction, right in the heart of the city. The picturesque promenade lined with sea food restaurants offers memorable cuisine. You can take boating trips to Île d'Aix and Fort Boyard. Visit Île de Ré Island by a two mile bridge for bird watching and sun bathing. The countryside is pretty rural with Venise Verte in the north having marshy areas criss-crossed with tiny canals offering inland boating enjoyment. Inland you also have Cognac fifty miles from La Rochelle as the core of the brandy trade. Located close by are companies like Hennessy, Martell and Remy-Martin. With its roots connected to maritime history La Rochelle offers a floating Maritime Museum to visit. But the best pleasure remains in strolling around old town, lounging in a seaside cafe, drinking a glass of wine and simply admiring the medieval harbor fortifications. |
