Kirkwall, an ancient port city is the largest town and capital of Orkney, off the coast of northern mainland Scotland. You have here fantastic wildlife, breathtaking panoramas and fascinating ancient wonders. The Hatston ferry terminal operated by NorthLink Ferries is about two miles from the centre of town.
Restaurants and cafes are within walking distance of the port area with majority of shops located in Albert and Bridge Streets. St Magnus Cathedral made of sandstone is without doubt the finest medieval building of North Scotland. This most impressive structure is the venue for a music festival each year in June.
You can follow marvelous coastal trails through the Parish of Evie for stunning views across Eynhallow Sound to the Island of Rousay and spectacular tidal roosts on either side of the mysterious Isle of Eynhallow, where the North Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean. Cruise to skirt nearby Birsay Moors RSPB Reserve, stopping at sandy beach of Birsay Bay to view imposing cliffs at Marwick Head.
Keep your eyes alert for your stop at the magnificent cliffs of Yesnaby, where you will find one of the most theatrical seascapes in Orkney as also the rare Primula Scotica or Scottish primrose that blooms just in May and July. You may travel inland to see the Heritage Site ‘Heart of Neolithic Orkney’, the great ceremonial stone circle, known as the Ring of Brodgar.
