Katakolon, a seaside town in western Ilia in Pyrgos, has the town center located within the gulf overlooking the Ionian Sea. Situated on a peninsula there is the Lighthouse of Katakolon that first opened in 1865. Katakolon is a small port town located about 15kms from Pyrgos on the western coast of the Peloponnese, and is 35 km from Ancient Olympia.
Having a deep water port Katakolon draws large cruise ships to explore this part of Greece. The beaches start from the end of town to stretch in a continuous arc around the huge Kyparissian Gulf for nearly 30 km. The warm shallow waters are perfectly safe and you can walk to it from the port. You can also rent scooters or cars and enjoy fish tavernas and beach bars alongside.
Reneta or Plakes Beach is closest from the port. Just walk to the end of the pier to reach the small pebbly beach offering a great place to swim and enjoy drinks. Katakolon is essentially the gateway to Olympia and you may visit the ruins. The Sanctuary holds remnants of athletic quadrangles, stadium, temples and treasuries. The Archaeological Museum houses Archaic, Classical and Roman sculptures.
Just five minute drive from Katakolon is Agios Andreas, a microscopic village with few small cafes and bars and two restaurants above a wonderful little beach. The hip Kastro café is a great place to relax to see the sophisticated Pyrgos crowd. Feel free to explore the beach and plop yourself under the rock overhangs. |
