| Istanbul is a megacity and the cultural, economic and financial center of Turkey. This bustling city spans Europe and Asia to include a multitude of diversity. Istanbul's Old City is a walled one offering many interesting sights and sounds. Sea transport is vital for Istanbul as the city is surrounded by sea on all sides. The Sea of Marmara, the Golden Horn, the Bosphorus and the Black Sea are all around. Istanbul known earlier as Byzantine and Constantinople offers incredible attractions. Awe inspiring sights and great entertainment in a completely different world. Ships come right on the Bosphorus directly across from the Old City just short of the first bridge crossing the Bosphorus near Dolmabahce Palace. Istanbul is well known for its Ottoman architecture, but its buildings reflect the varied empires that ruled it from time to time. You will see Genoese, Byzantine, Roman, and even Greek architecture that remain visible in Istanbul alongside the Ottoman counterparts. The Old City within walking distance is a great place to wander and you can head back to the famous Spice Market. The Blue Mosque is the key attraction and you may explore Old City's sights and shop from the bazaars. Even as the imperial mosques dominate much of the city's skyline, you will be surprised to find a number of historic churches and synagogues. One of the most awesome experiences you will have in Istanbul is to hear the morning or afternoon prayer telling you that you are in a truly unique place. |
