| Freeport is a port city on the island of Grand Bahama in the district of the Bahamas. The city has grown to be the second most populous, after Nassau and enjoys a subtropical climate with mild winters. Cruise ships dock at Lucayan Harbour and taxis are available from the pier to take you to Freeport, a ten minute drive away. Also rental cars and scooters are available. Lucayan Harbour has 106 berths and the Harbour Cruise Facility is modern cruise-passenger terminal featuring a Tourist Information Centre and Retail Village. Tourism is the mainstay with numerous visitors arriving at Lucaya -- the seaside suburb of Freeport. There are hotels, shopping venues, International Bazaar near downtown and the Port Lucaya Market Place. Sightseeing will take you to Rand Nature Centre at Petersons Cay, to the small isle off the shore of Grand Bahama. Lucayan National Park is 40 acres in extent and includes five ecological zones along with an extensive underwater cave system beneath the Park. Activities include golfing, gambling and beach combing. The Royal Oasis Casino is the biggest casino in Freeport and in fact in the Bahamas, attracting nightlife enthusiasts. Enjoy island hopping to cruise around the sights and sounds of the ocean. Excursions take you to Eleuthera Island's Glass Window Bridge, mysterious stone blocks off Bimini Islands and the world's deepest 'blue hole' dive site. Day sailing is a popular activity letting you indulge in group fishing trips, island visiting, scuba diving and snorkeling. Cruise ships deposit you away from city attractions if it's quiet relaxation that you prefer. |
