| Ephesus, ancient Greek and later Roman city is located in Turkey. Situated in Izmir Province it is home to the famed Temple of Artemis that was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Cruise passengers disembark in Kusadasi to get to Ephesus, less than 30 minutes by bus. The ruins of Ephesus awe you completely and can be easily accessed via the port of Kuşadası. They are the largest collection of Roman ruins at the eastern end of the Mediterranean. This is what makes it a favored shore excursion. As the biggest and best-preserved site it remains a spectacular heritage. The city established since the 2nd century BC with a harbour near the mouth of Cayster River, was an important trading port. It was also a significant early seat of Christianity that has seen the Hellenistic period, Roman Asian rule and Byzantine era. Ephesus is literally dotted with history that is evident all around. The theater dominates the view down Harbour Street that leads to the silted-up harbor. The amphitheatre, murals, mosaics, baths, fountains, brothels and columns as also chariot-worn streets are highlights of this ancient city. The Basilica, Church of St. John, Church of Virgin Mary, Agora, Aqueduct of Sextilius Pollio are worth seeing. Apart from these, other well-known tourist attractions include Temple of Hadrian, Terrace Houses, Isabey Mosque, Celsus library, Ephesus Museum, Baths of Varius, Scholastika and Fountains of Trajan and Pollio.
