| Port of Leith at Edinburgh is the terminal for ships cruising Northern European sailings. This ocean terminal has a shopping mall, restaurants and pubs and a key attraction are tours to Royal Yacht Britannia docked here. Edinburgh city is easily accessed by taxi or buses, just ten minutes ride away or a quick thirty minute brisk walk, if you are so inclined. Remember it rains a lot, so be well prepared. The Edinburgh Castle is the main attraction for passengers who may also like to walk around exploring the Old and New towns demarcated by Princes Street Gardens. Alluring cobbled alleyways and green gardens abound. Old Town dating back to 12th century medieval times has a number of historic monuments. The Royal Mile with its historic thoroughfare has the Edinburgh Castle atop and the Palace of Holyroodhouse, Queen of England's official residence, down below. The New Town in reality dates back to the 18th century and is actually a moniker in that sense. It is home to many of Edinburgh's art museums, galleries and shops. Attractions include The National Gallery, Royal Scottish Academy and National Gallery of Scotland holding Scotland's greatest collection of Old Masters. Excursion trips from Edinburgh include North Berwick a seaside resort town and St. Andrews, a medieval town with the famed golf course. The Edinburgh Tattoo is an entertainment extravaganza held at the Castle over a three week summer period hosting wide ranging performers and singers including Bagpipe music. No visit to Edinburgh would be complete without an evening ghost tour of the underground city built in 1600s. See it by torchlight for a spooky visit. |
