| Danube, Europe's second longest river is classified as an international waterway. Originating in the Black Forest in Germany it flows for a distance of 1771 miles, to pass through four Central and Eastern European capitals, before reaching the Black Sea in Romania and Ukraine. The Danube is negotiable by ocean ships from the Black Sea to Brăila in Romania and by river ships to Kelheim, Bavaria and Germany. The German Rhine–Main–Danube Canal is part of trans-European waterway from Rotterdam on North Sea to Sulina on Black Sea. A usual cruise starts in Germany to pass through Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Serbia and Bulgaria to finish off in Romania. Bucharest is 40 miles north of the cities of Giurgiu in Romania and Ruse in Bulgaria with both situated on the bank sides. Important tourist and natural spots along the Danube include Wachau Valley, National Park Donau-Auen in Austria, Gemenc in Hungary, Naturpark Obere Donau in Germany, Kopački rit in Croatia, Iron Gate in Serbia and Romania, Danube Delta in Romania, and Srebarna Nature Reserve in Bulgaria. Major tourist sites include Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest and Belgrade offering great sightseeing attractions. You see palaces and cathedrals in Vienna, castle of Bratislava, charming Budapest and unique Belgrade. These are included in the most itineraries for halting for a few days. Glide past small fishing villages, endless plains and high mountains traversed in just a few days. The entrance in Romania is marked by the longest and most spectacular gorges in Europe.
