Cozumel is one of the most enjoyable and memorable destinations in a cruise itinerary from Galveston. Blessed with a tropical climate and plenty of sunshine the island on the Caribbean Sea lies off the eastern coast of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. The chief town on the island is San Miguel de Cozumel. Spanish is the official language of Cozumel but English is widely spoken by everyone.
There are three different pier locations - Punta Langosta, the International Pier and Puerto Maya pier. Ships are usually anchored outside and boats tender you in. Downtown San Miguel is just a half hour walk and the downtown area is also walkable with lots of shops, bars and restaurants around the waterfront.
San Miguel lives around its landmarks – the town square called Plaza del Sol and the downtown pier that have thrived since the growth of the cruise industry. Other than handicrafts and jewelry, Cozumel offers incredible options for watersports' lovers being close to the coral reefs. Snorkeling, scuba diving and boating are popular activities. Prime sites for divers include Palancar Reef, Chankanaab Caves and La Ceiba Reef.
Glass-bottom boat tours provide a glimpse of the reefs for the interested especially those who prefer to stay dry. These tours occasionally also stop for snorkeling breaks. There are several small Mayan sites scattered around Cozumel. San Gervasio is the best one located seven miles from San Miguel. You can visit Chankanaab Marine National Park as also the East coast and West Coast beaches. |
