| Cagliari, capital Island of Sardinia, is a region of Italy with a long, ancient history. Cagliari remains an important regional cultural and artistic centre having diverse Art Nouveau architecture and great monuments. Cagliari is the greenest Italian city, with its Mediterranean climate of hot dry summers and mild winters. As one of the biggest ports in the Mediterranean Sea, cruise ships make it a favored port of call. The growing traffic is accorded a welcome at the new cruise terminal at Molo Ichnusa. With one of the longest beaches in Italy, Cagliari’s Poetto Beach stretches out for 13 km along the coastline of Quartu Sant'Elena. The smaller Calamosca Beach is in Sant'Elia district. Several attractive parks add to the beauty of the city. These include Regional Park of Molentargius, Park of San Michele, Terramaini Park, Monte Claro Park and the Public Gardens. Cagliari is close to other beautiful seaside locations like Maddalena Beach, Chia or Villasimius that are relatively unspoilt by tourism. Cagliari is essentially a tourist city with lots of clubs and pubs around the Marina district near to the port and also Castello district. The old part of the city called Castello or thecastle atop the hill offers wonderful views of Gulf of Cagliari. Most parts of old city walls are intact and feature two 13th century white lime-stone towers - St. Pancras Tower and Elephant Tower. The Cathedral and Church of Purissima in Via La Marmora date back to 16th century. More attractions in the vicinity include former City Hall, Viceregal Palace and Archbishop’s Palace. |
