| Cruise ships visit Antwerp, located some 70 kilometers inland from the North Sea on the River Scheldt. Ships moor at the new cruise terminal on the River along with plentiful river cruise ships and yachts that dock alongside. Port area marinas offer a wide range of water-based activities. Antwerp is a popular tourist area for cruise ships docking right beside the town that has been a major port since the Middle Ages. In 1997 this second largest European port extended the status of port of call for cruise ships. Located by the old and picturesque city center, cruise destinations tourist sites are well within walking distance of the mooring place. The wealth of historic sites are conveniently situated on the one square kilometer area near the riverbanks. Just fifty miles from the North Sea Antwerp is located by a sheltered estuary. Walk straight towards the historic downtown in just two minutes. Being much less touristy than places in the region, Antwerp located in the Flanders Region maintains Flemish language and its culture. The city is fairly compact, on flat ground and visitors walk, cycle or take a tram. Old Town is around the semi-circular area running along the river front. It is the 123 meters tall Cathedral of Our Lady with Rubens originals and the beautiful Main Square or Grote Markt that draws passengers. The Steen or the old waterside fortress is also a must see. Churches and museums are plentiful and the town is best known for Rubens' House and Quartier Latin. De Keyseriei and Meir are the main shopping streets that are among the prettiest in Europe. |
