Andros Islands in Bahamas - Bonefish Capital of the World

Andros Island

Andros Islands comprising of three major islands -- North Andros, Mangrove Cay, and South Andros is right beside a huge barrier reef that is over 225 km long, affectionately called Big Yard. Andros islands have three key towns -- Nicholls Town, Andros Town and Congo Town. It's the Bonefish Capital of the World, home to third largest barrier reef in the western hemisphere.

Andros's interior is relatively free of tourism in the strictest sense so much of the natural beauty is intact and well preserved. Full of great natural beauty the east coast of Andros Island lies by the Tongue of the Ocean that's a cavernous oceanic trench, home to the fringing reef system of The Bahamas.

A major attraction here are Andros blue holes that are water filled cave systems. They draw cave divers from all over the world to sites such as Stargate, The Guardian and Little Frenchman. These blue holes are in the ocean and inland. Two of inland blue holes on Andros are Charlie's Blue Hole and Church's Blue Hole. Tour boats leave from Small Hope Bay for the holes.

Anglers from around the globe come to the spectacular waters off the east coast of this island. Imagine the 12 feet water around the reef abruptly sinks 6000 feet into the Tongue of the Ocean. And it contains colorful marine life of nearly all species, spectacular coral gardens and underwater caverns.

Nearby settlements that make for nice excursions include Lowe Sound, Staniard Creek, Mangrove Cay, Driggs Hill, Kemps Bay, Long Bay Cays, Deep Creek, Pleasant Bay, Mars Bay, Behring Point, Calabash Bay, and Stafford Creek.
