| The Abaco islands -- second largest of the Bahamas' Out Island groupings, includes Great and Little Abaco. Marsh Harbour located on Great Abaco Island is the third biggest town in the Bahamas. Despite commercial activity it retains the laid-back style of the Out Islands. As the hub for Abaco it offers boat services as also haul-out facilities. The town has a choice of marinas, boat storage, hotels and restaurants. Taxi services are available as are bicycle and car rental services. Offering interesting exploration all around, Marsh Harbor's actual anchorage is a short dinghy ride to the dinghy dock. There are plentiful marinas like Conch Inn, Harbour View and Marsh Harbour Marina. Castaway Cay is Disney Cruise Lines' private island where the Disney Magic visits twice weekly. Treasure Cay is 25 miles north of Marsh Harbour well known for its awesome thirty mile beach stretching alongside the 18-hole golf course. Tourism in Abaco is at its peak during summer yachting months. The cays east of Great Abaco form the protected cruising grounds better known as the sailing capital of the world. The Sea of Abaco is where summer fishing tournaments, regattas, ocean racing and fishing derbies take place. Other attractions include Pelican Cay National Park, an underwater preserve and Abaco National Park, nesting habitat of the Abaco Parrot. Excursions can be made to Hope Town for the candy-striped lighthouse, Man O War Cay, Wyannie Malone Museum, Guana Cay and Green Turtle Cay with New England-style architecture and 150 year old residence housing the Albert Lowe Museum. |
